Tandem Cycle Pilots (Lancashire)

We are Bury Tandem Club for Blind and Partially Sighted People. We are always looking for more volunteers interested in becoming a front rider or ‘pilot’ on a tandem with a visually impaired person as the rear rider or 'stoker'.

Pilots will also be:

  • Providing support and guidance once off the bike, such as guiding the stoker when at a café stop, or reading the menu for them
  • Communicating with your stoker, both to make the ride enjoyable for them, and also to let them know what is going on
  • Taking responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of your stoker at all times during the ride, both on and off the bike

The skills you need

  • A confident cyclist with interest in supporting others to cycle
  • Friendly, welcoming and encouraging attitude
  • Sensitive to others’ needs i.e. awareness when attendees are tired or need a break
